Monday, 2/11 Team Progress [Feb. 11th, 2008|07:36 pm]
[Tags|]

Hi, everyone. Today we made pretty good progress in mechanics and electronics. Dante's drivetrain is nearly complete! For those who don't know, we decided days ago to switch to chains for the wheels, and now we just need to insert tensioners so the chains fit tighter. I believe we are using plastic blocks to tension them. Also, the pully is coming along. We have been able to lift the globe meters with it, and right now the box that will house the motor and wormgear for the lift is being finished up. The electronic board was taken apart and is now being put back together; however, we are missing four breakers. If anyone finds them, please tell Anthony H. or Matt R. or anyone else that's working on the board. I think that's about it (sorry if I missed or misstated something). Great job today, everybody. Keep up the good work!

I'd like to take this time to thank the two of you for actually reading this post.  On the off chance that you weren't at the meeting, here's what we did.  Andrew B. and Jerry C. revealed the results of a secret officer robot design meeting held on Thursday.  Now the logic is people don't have to wait on the officers to decide on things to get started.  Andrew B. continued his streak of productiveness with a scale drawing of the mechanism for the belt.  Jerry (you know who it is, there's only one) led a team on working on the frame.  Finally, thanks to Mr. Hennig, Mrs. Capuano, and Mrs. Pirko for supervising (and the pizza!)  Until next Friday, I remain, (ha! you don't know).

Saturday through Wednesday [Jan. 16th, 2008|11:57 pm]

[Current Mood | sleepy]

Welcome to week two!

Since there hasn't been an update on here since Friday, I'll briefly mention what happened at the other meetings.

Saturday: I was not there, but apparently we "built prototypes and tested things". This was supposed to help finalize he design of the robot.

Monday: Electronics continued their work with the electronics board, the officers worked on figuring out their budgets, and everyone else tried to solve their Rubix cubes. Apparently, the designing Saturday helped, for the chassis was getting built.

Tuesday: Animation team brainstormed for the first time. The eight officers met to decide the budgets that each area needed. The plans were finally decided in regards to the drive train and the elevator system that we'll use to lift the ball. The mentor/engineer also visited. Sadly, I am unaware of his name at this time.

Wednesday: We had nachos for snack! Resource manager Chris D. did an amazing job inventorying all the metals and the electronics parts (with the help of Matthew R. obviously). Caitlin R. researched ways the team could look "unified" and full of team spirit (Go team 422!) at the competitions, so we voted on a type of hat (baseball cap with a dragon tail, fedora, bucket hat, visor) and accessory (foam finger with team logo or bandanna) that may or may not be purchased depending on everyone who wasn't here today's opinion. In other news, Chaitanya B. and Matthew R. were close to having a working electronics board ready for a robot.

Week 1, Day 7 [Jan. 11th, 2008|09:47 pm]
[Tags|]

Don't stress out or anything, but we've only got 5 weeks left in build season. We don't need to worry though, its not like we're behind or anything...
But I've been asked to write a journal, not a panic attack on a computer, so a journal I'll write. The majority of the first part of the meeting was spent making prototypes and testing out various concepts. After work on the cannon, kit-mock-ups, and pneumatics, we came together in a meeting do evaluate our options so far. We started with the belt, forklift, hybrid, pincer, arm, and cannon, and we ditched the arm and pincer. The others (minus the cannon) would all use the same forklift design to lift the ball, so we decided to start work on the chassis so we can test out our ideas on the chassis. After dinner Jerry made a presentation about transmissions, and then the rest of the time was spent testing the horseshoe out in the hall.

P.S. To those, like, two people who read this, congratulations. To everybody who doesn't, I'm making fun of you behind your back.

Hey, this is my first time updating this, so please forgive me that its not very detailed. The next time I have to, I'll try to make it better.
So, today one of the engineers from New Market came to listen to us present our ideas and give us feedback, on how to make them better, and possible things to consider doing. (sadly, I don't remember exactly what they were.) Anthony H. had interesting computer-generated plans, and Charles C (forgive me if this is the wrong last initial) built a lego model of one of his idea for the fingers of a claw. There were also some interesting points made of maybe simply hurling the ball up over the overpass at a 75 degree angle using a continuous laser beam to pinpoint exactly when/where to throw, however, upon reading the rules we have since learned that no lasers of any type are allowed. Overall, it was a very useful meeting. See you guys on Friday!

Tuesday, January 8,2008-Day Four of Continuous Sleepless Nights [Jan. 8th, 2008|08:50 pm]

Hey Everybody,
We had an amazingly productive meeting today. We built the entire robot after discussing designs and all we need to do now is paint it orange with purple flames. Just kidding. Actually, we did discuss some major components of the robot...
        (1) Wheels: we decided that a 4*4 drive train was the best idea with interchangeable omni wheels
(2)Transmission: we all agreed that a two speed transmission was the right way to go, but we couldn't decide between buying two or making our own since together the two bought would cost about 700 dollars.(We need two because one transmission can only take two sims)
Please look up any information you can find on transmissions-how we could build one, better prices from different companies, how long it will take to ship the transmissions versus the individual parts needed to build our own, installation-ANYTHING
(3)Ball Manipulation: two main designs popped up after all our planning this weekend. The first being to have a ring that tightens around the trackball and the second being to lift the ball with a fork-lift type object

Us Freshman learned the Inventor computer program from Andrew B.

See you guys tomorrow

Week 1, Day 1 [Jan. 7th, 2008|09:49 pm]
[Tags|]

As we will end up doing throughout build season, we commenced at 3.20ish. Until five o'clock, most of the time was spent brainstorming and discussing possible drive train systems. A drive train is includes the way the wheels are arranged on the robot, where the motors will go, how many motors the robot will even have, et cetera. There was also a lot of discussion on appendages -- possible arms, elevator systems using pneumatics, catapults, and the like. It was nice to have a good mix of freshmen and veterans so that there were fresh ideas circulating. After finishing the discussions around 5.30, we broke into the subgroups we divided ourselves into yesterday. Electronics and mechanical started explaining things to their groups, as well as communications and public relations. Robotics finished around 6. Hopefully, tomorrow will be as productive as today was.

Kick-Off -- Day Two [Jan. 6th, 2008|07:30 pm]
Today we met at noon and spent the first hour and a half of the meeting absorbed in a parents' meeting. During that time period, they discussed the schedule for build season, other important dates, the budget, chaperone and build season needs, and sponsors/mentors. The officers then met as a group to discuss their responsibilites throughout the coming build season. At three p.m., all the students and mentors met to hear about the different areas in which they can focus (program management, public relations, resource management, communications, mechanical, electrical, programming, and animation). Then, the students picked which areas they wanted to work most heavily in during this season. Following that, Mr. Henning talked about design of the robot. At five o'clock, the meeting was concluded.

Kick-Off! [Jan. 5th, 2008|11:11 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , ]

Today was Kick-Off!

The meeting commenced at 9 a.m. and finished at 5 p.m. We watched a video that announced the challenge for 2008! The announcers on the NASA webcast (through which the video was shown) also briefly mentioned the possible scholarships that could come because of F.I.R.S.T. so for you seniors out there applying to VCU, look here. After the end of the video, Matthew R. and Alex C. returned to school (from VCU) with the kit of supplies to build the robot. We'll have to use our own materials as well, but this is a basic set of materials that everyone uses. Lunch was pizza. Immediately after lunch, Andrew R., Charles C., London R., Jonny K. were appointed "rule guru"s. Their responsibility is to know the rules of the challenge forwards and backwards to that they can help if anyone has a question regarding (what else?) rules. Then, most of the team split into brainstorming groups to discuss various aspects of the game, while Andrew R. and Matthew G. drew up a model of the playing field. During this time, Anthony H came up with seven separate designs over the course of the meeting, many of which could be feasible.  Dylan A. presented his idea for a claw, and Andrew B. had an amazing idea for a very small robot that just runs laps, racking points up that way.  It would lean nto its turns like a motorcycle, by pneumatic pistons that raise or lower its wheels.  One brainstorming group worked strategy, and they figured out the best ways to earn points. Eventually everyone reconvened so the groups could share their ideas. Jerry C. recorded most of the information on the whiteboard so those of you who will be at the meeting tomorrow (12 noon to 5 p.m.) can see. At the end of the meeting, we discussed names for the soon-to-come robot. The name of choice so far is "Dante" closely followed by "Pyro" (12-10).

Meeting [Oct. 24th, 2007|07:53 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

Today's meeting went well.

Highlights from the meeting:

-Kasia* collected contact information for the team members. If you have not already spoken to her about contact information and you are a     freshman or are new to the team, you need to find her by next Wednesday. Everyone else, don't worry. She'll find you if she needs you.

-It was announced that our team is sponsoring a drive to fill stockings with small items (such as toothbrushes, candy, slinkys, et cetera) for     the American troops overseas. NewMarket is actually hosting the drive, but we'll have a school-wide drive so that we can help out.

-Matthew R. and Chris D. worked on finding people to go to the presentation for NewMarket.

-Everyone else worked on cleaning the room and getting to know each other.

We really need a team slogan. Until we vote on one...

422 to the rescue!

Duel on the Delaware [Oct. 21st, 2007|06:09 pm]
Impressions from a first year member of the team:

The Robotics Duel on the Delaware trip was an amazing experience for me. Not only did I get to learn all about what actually happens at a robotics competition and how to maneuver the robot., but I also became much closer to many members of the team that were on the trip. Although we didn't do too well in the actual competition, I did learn a bunch (whether pertaining to robotics or not). After teh competition (and teh founding of a new obsession of juggling), bowling was great, and at Cracker Barrel an affinity for maple syrup became evident. Even though we stayed up late and got up early, and despite having to room with someone's mom, I definitely enjoyed the trip and would most certainly go again. : )

Other team members' impressions:

Coming soon! (in theaters near you!)

Meeting [Oct. 10th, 2007|08:19 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

Hi.

These are the notes from today's meeting.

I had a group of freshmen including Catherine, Laura, Justin, Roy, Cindy, and Leon work on creating a list of potential sponsors under Chris's leadership. Their list was as follows: DuPont, Capital One, the Science Museum, the Children's Museum, IBM, auto stores, Castle Tech, and Anthem. Their list of potential community service organizations we could serve were: Children's Museum, Science Museum, the local Food Bank, American Heart Association (what?), Bon Secours, MLW Historic Site (again, what?), VCU Dep't of Psychology (eh, being test subjects?), Special Olympics, Boys and Girls Club, and Habitat for Humanity.

One of the first things that we need to do is get a complete roster with names and email addresses (along with other pertinent information). I'm not sure if anyone already has a copy, but Joey was under the impression that we didn't. Chris kindly made a list of all the people who have turned in safety forms.

Next, Joey, Matthew, and I brainstormed possible mentors/sponsors. This was a rather limited effort as Mr. Riblett has the list of possible sponsors. The mentors we considered were: Mr. McCombs from the Science Museum, as they apparently have a shop in the basement. Mr. Hennig, Anthony's father, referred us to him. Mr. Hennig works at an Italian firm which might be interested in sponsoring us. Another person we should contact is Ms. Grois's husband, as he has offered to help us numerous times. Joey also knows a man by the name of "Mr. T" who might be able to mentor sometimes.

Anthony brought over a list of people who he thought we should contact. They included: Paul Gasek (the producer of the Discovery channel), Richard Hudson (another important person for the Discovery Channel), and Richard Wyatt (assistant surgeon general of the NIH).

During the meeting, Mr. Hill and Mr. Whimmer, both from New Market, stopped by to visit. Mr. Carlson introduced them and showed them around. At that point, most people were in the robotics room working diligently on the robot (or learning how to file in the case of freshmen), and a few were focussed on animation area under the Jared's watch.

Willus, Matthew G., Jerry, Joey, Alex C., and I came up with a basic skill list that people should be able to use/do.
Here is is:
-drill
-hack saw
-jig saw
-grinder
-drill press
-chop saw
-file
-measuring tapes and calipers
-crimp
-strip wires
-rivets
-turn on/off the robot
-have an understanding of where everything goes
-have a clear understanding of the safety rules

At some point in the next few meetings, every freshman should learn how to use/do any of the above which s/he currently is unable to do.

On another note, here is a things to do list:

-Matthew R. : take photos at this weekend's Duel
-Ribletts : send Kasia* the possible sponsor list
-Tom F. : explain the official website scenario to Alex C. and Kasia*

Good luck at Duel!

Kasia*
